Hello Family Members!

With our program Science Fusion, we are studying the solar system, including the Earth and its moon as well as the other planets. Our unit of study focuses on these Big Ideas and Essential Questions.

Unit 6 Earth and Space

Big Idea (a broad statement about the science topic we are studying) Objects in space including Earth and its moon move in regular observable patterns.

Essential Questions (for exploring the Big Idea)

· How do the sun, Earth, and moon interact?

· What are moon phases?

· What are the planets in our solar system?

To stay up-to-date with our progress, ask about what’s happening in science class often. Talk about and use the unit’s vocabulary words whenever you can.To reinforce what we’re doing, try this activity with your child.

Your child is learning about the planets in our solar system. Pick a planet and become “experts” on it.

· Talk with your child about the planets. Which is your favorite—the planet closest to Earth? Farthest from Earth? The biggest planet? The planet with rings?

· Pick a planet to explore.

· Brainstorm a list of questions about your planet.

· Follow up with print or digital research about your questions.

· Our Solar System by Seymour Simon is a book with exciting images and engaging text on the topic.

· Www.nasm.si.edu/research/ceps/etp/ss/, sponsored by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, offers up-to-date images of the planets, data for comparisons, and more.

· Put together a fact sheet about your planet.

· Share the coolest facts with the rest of the family!
