How can I oversee the use of a device at home? Are there resources for families?

APS developed a Digital Citizenship curriculum (K-12) to help all students develop digital literacy and self-regulation skills. The curriculum is based on the work from Common Sense Education’s K-12 Digital Citizenship Curriculum. Common Sense Media also provides information and suggestions for parents on the use of technology at home: Common Sense Media ~ Parent Concerns.

The Joan Ganz Cooney Center is an independent research and innovation lab that focuses on the challenges of educating children in a rapidly changing media landscape. You can access their parent publications here. Here is a great quick visual resource on selecting and using apps:

Janell Burley Hofmann is the author of the book, iRules: What Every Tech-Healthy Family Needs to Know About Selfies, Sexting, Gaming and Growing Up. Her website offers many valuable resources and can be accessed here. She offers tips for parents on how to become a “Slow Tech Family,” as well as a tool to create “iRules,” or technology rules that carry the same parenting philosophies that currently exist in the home.

Parent reviews, Family reviews by Common Sense Media offers a library of reviews for movies, books, apps, TV shows, video games, websites, and music that families can filter by age, entertainment type, learning rating, genre, and more.
NetSmartz is an interactive, educational program of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) that provides age-appropriate resources to help teach children how to be safer on- and offline. The program is designed for children ages 5-17, parents and guardians, educators, and law enforcement.
